Truth or myth?

I’m a sucker for good stews. And if you are a stew lover as well, you know that often times wine or beer is added to the cooking process. Hooray!

I always thought that this would cause no harm and kids of all ages could enjoy my stews, whether I added wine or not. I mean, the alcohol vaporizes while cooking so nobody can get drunk right? Wrong!

Apparantly alcohol DOES NOT burn off. As it turns out, many popular dishes cooked with wine or any other liquor still contain alcohol. So, what’s the best way to cook with alcohol? Well, of all the cooking methods you could use, baking or simmering for 2 and 1/2 hours or longer (like done with stews) removes the most alcohol overall. But 30 minutes of baking still leaves you with a little over a third of any alcohol you added to the recipe. So the longer you cook a dish, the less alcohol remains. But keep in mind – especially when serving children or recovering alcoholics – that a small percentage of alcohol will remain.

And why it makes such a good name

And why it makes such a good name

And time is crucial, because without time, great heaping swaths of time, there can be no glaciers and no glacial landscapes.

Glaciers speak to me of ancient forces. There is something primeval about them; they evoke images of cavemen and mastodons and a time before history. And time is crucial, because without time, great heaping swaths of time, there can be no glaciers and no glacial landscapes. To climb up a great glacial valley is to lose oneself beneath sheer mountain heights like battlements from an age of warrior giants that’s faded into legend. On my path beneath these ancient ice-carved ramparts I am powerless with awe at what has gone before.

The above is an abstract from the “Glaciers and Goldilocks: a tale of three planets” chapter as found in the Stars Above, Earth Below book (2010). The book, subtitled “A Guide to Astronomy in the National Parks” is written by Tyler Nordgren. An astronomer who spent 14 months traveling across the US, visiting 12 national parks and wrote a diary about his experiences of the unique aspects of the night sky at each site.

If you have come this far you might be wondering what the connection between glaciers and aprons is, as hinted in the title of this post. Well, to my own surprise we can even speak of the existence of so called Ice Aprons. Ice aprons are small, steep glaciers that cling to high mountainsides. They are often wider than they are long. Tell me, ever heard of ice aprons? I for one did not, but after reading about it I decided that our very first apron model should be called ‘The Glacier’.

A short breakdown

Upprvalley, whats in the name you say? If we break the brand name apart then we have two words; upper and valley. Though it really consist of three main ingredients.

First up are mountains and valleys, ascending and descending, which form the outdoor aspect in the name. As cityfolk we have a natural longing for the outdoors as both escape and catalyzer as well. Just like concrete buildings need trees and other greens to make it a livable and pleasant environment.

Upprvalley is also about everyday life, a state of mind

Upprvalley is also about everyday life, the highs and lows, uplifting music and comfort foods. A state of mind. From the top to the nitty gritty.

And finally Uppr also represent uptown, premium and quality while Valley on the other hand reminds us its not about the glitter and glamour and pricetags. Yes, our prices are premium but we stand for quality, durability and less waste. We’d rather see you buy one apron from us each 3 – 5 years then every other month and replace old with new. Kindalike its usually best to do one thing well, we believe you’re better off buying one good product than multiple cheaper items.

Could we have made the breakdown any shorter? Probably, but why would we? In fact, in the upcoming blogs we’ll dive deeper in our brand so you can get a better understanding of it and the reasons why it became and we do what we do. Because journey’s don’t end.

Keep on keeping on!
